Adolescents receive separate care from adults, tailored to their specific stage of life.
We currently only provide Adolescent treatment at the PHP and IOP levels of care.
Levels of Care
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offers structured, intensive support for children/teens/adolescents needing a higher level of care. PHP runs Monday through Friday and includes individual and group therapy, meal support, family therapy, and psychoeducational sessions. This treatment plan is ideal for those requiring monitoring as they learn new coping strategies in their daily life. Our PHP patient care team involves a registered dietitian , therapist, and psychiatrist sessions.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for children/teens/adolescents who have completed PHP or need less intensive care. It offers flexible scheduling, allowing them to maintain school and personal responsibilities while receiving essential therapy, meal support, and psycho-educational presentations. Our IOP patient care team involves a registered dietitian and therapist. We collaborate closely with schools to ensure students can excel academically while receiving the care they need. (see how we work with local schools to accommodate treatment)
Comprehensive Teen/Adolescent Care
Individual Therapy
Each adolescent works with a primary therapist and dietitian to address emotional and psychological factors of their eating disorder. Therapy also covers self-esteem, body image, and relationships. Adolescents are encouraged to express emotions, share their stories, and build confidence in social interactions, promoting healthier relationships with themselves and others.
Family Therapy Sessions
Family involvement is vital for recovery. Our family therapy and weekly support groups help strengthen communication, improve dynamics, and equip parents to support their child’s recovery. Families also participate in meal processes to better understand and manage meals at home.
Multidisciplinary Treatment Team
Our multidisciplinary team of therapists, dietitians, psychiatrists, and other specialists collaborate to create individualized medical care plans. This approach ensures all aspects of the adolescent’s well-being are addressed, from their physical health to their emotional growth.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
WHAT DO THESE TERMS MEAN? DBT, CBT, FBT, PSYCHODRAMA?
Each modality reflects ViaMar Health’s integrative, trauma-informed care model, engaging cognitive, emotional, familial, and experiential pathways to foster deep and lasting healing in adolescent eating disorder recovery.
Understanding Key Therapies at ViaMar Health
At ViaMar Health, we understand that the language of therapy can sometimes feel unfamiliar or overwhelming, especially when you’re navigating care for an adolescent facing an eating disorder. This FAQ breaks down several core therapeutic approaches we use in our adolescent programs, helping families and teens better understand how each method supports healing. Whether it’s processing trauma, building emotional resilience, or strengthening family support, these evidence-based modalities are thoughtfully integrated into our care model to meet each individual’s unique needs. Below, you’ll find explanations for Psychodrama, DBT, CBT, and FBT, essential components of the comprehensive, trauma-informed care offered at ViaMar Health.
Psychodrama
As part of ViaMar’s experiential therapy suite, psychodrama provides a creative, active space where teens can explore internal conflicts and emotional patterns through role-play, guided enactments, and group reflection. This approach helps surface feelings that may fuel disordered eating and empowers youth to practice healthier emotional expression in a safe, supportive environment.
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy)
DBT is a cornerstone of ViaMar’s therapeutic model, offering adolescents a structured curriculum to build key life skills—emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. These tools help reduce self-harm, urge-driven behaviors, and emotional dysregulation that often underpin eating disorder symptoms.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
CBT is an evidence-based treatment at ViaMar that equips teens with strategies to identify unhelpful thoughts and behavioral patterns related to food, body image, and self-esteem. By restructuring these thought patterns and replacing them with healthier alternatives, adolescents learn to change the behaviors that sustain their eating disorder.
FBT (Family-Based Treatment)
ViaMar leverages Family-Based Treatment to actively involve families in the adolescent’s recovery journey. Parents participate in structured sessions that guide them to support their teen’s meal planning and normalizing eating behaviors at home, empowering the entire family system as a healing resource.

HOW DOES GROUP THERAPY BENEFIT TEENS / ADOLESCENTS?
ViaMar Health emphasizes group therapy as a powerful tool for adolescents navigating eating disorders. Their day and outpatient programs highlight that group therapy “provides peer support, shared experiences, and skill‑building in a supportive environment” Teens quickly learn they’re not alone. Others face similar struggles with self-esteem, anxiety, body image, or eating habits, which helps reduce feelings of isolation and builds connection.
In structured settings, either our PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) or IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program), teens engage in activities like emotion-regulation, coping strategies, and communication exercises. Group sessions “help reduce feelings of isolation and promote a sense of community” while teaching essential recovery tools.
Interacting with peers in a therapeutic setting aids adolescents in practicing expression, asserting needs, and receiving encouragement. This fosters both confidence and social competence, which are critical for maintaining recovery post-treatment.
Group therapy can motivate teens to stay engaged. Shared goals and mutual reinforcement create a positive feedback environment that supports long-term commitment to recovery.
At PHP and IOP levels, group therapy is a core component of the structured routine. This consistency benefits adolescents by providing predictable emotional and social check‑ins, reinforcing healthy coping patterns in a stable environment.
Do You Offer Residential Treatment for Adolescents?
No, we currently do not offer Residential level treatment for teens / adolescents. Instead we provide PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and IOP (Intensive Outpatient) levels of care.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON EATING DISORDER SYMPTOMS?
Identifying the early signs of an eating disorder in a teen or adolescent child can be challenging, especially when disordered behaviors are hidden beneath high-functioning routines, academic pressure, or emotional withdrawal. At ViaMar Health, we understand that no two patients or families experience an eating disorder in the same way. That’s why our adolescent programs emphasize early intervention, compassionate care, and age-appropriate support. Whether symptoms appear gradually or suddenly, knowing what to look for can make all the difference in getting timely help and setting a young person on the path toward lasting recovery.
Changes in Eating Behaviors & Nutrition Patterns
- Obsessions with food, restrictive eating, skipping meals, bingeing, or purging behaviors (like vomiting) all suggest disordered eating patterns and may indicate emerging eating disorder symptoms.
- Avoidance of specific foods or food groups, exaggerated meal rituals, or fear-based control over calories signal risk.
Weight & Physical Symptoms
- Rapid weight loss or fluctuations outside of growth expectations—especially in adolescents—may point to dangerous behaviors.
- Physical signs such as dizziness, fainting, fainting spells, dental erosion, faint irregularities, or gastrointestinal issues may develop from malnutrition or behaviors like purging.
Emotional & Behavioral Red Flags
- A teen may exhibit heightened anxiety or fear around food, eating situations, exercise, or weight gain, interfering with daily functioning.
- Mood changes, increased irritability, withdrawal from social activities, decline in school performance, and diminished self-esteem or confidence are common warning signs.
Exercise & Control Patterns
- Excessive or compulsive exercise aimed at compensating for food intake reflects a need for control and can signify unhealthy behavioral patterns.
- Overly rigid rules related to meals, body image, exercise routines or weight can hint at deeper issues requiring therapeutic intervention.
Interference with Daily Life & Social Functioning
- When eating disorder symptoms disrupt growth (height/weight), development, social life, relationships with family and friends, or overall mental health, it signals a need for a structured intervention.
- Withdrawal from loved ones, avoidance of family meals, or secrecy around eating behaviors suggest a loss of insight and control, hallmarks of clinical concern.
Family Concerns & Parental Observations
- Parents noticing marked changes in eating, weight restoration efforts, nutrition intake, behaviors around food, or increasing fear and anxiety should take action. ViaMar Health emphasizes early intervention while the teenager is still within the family environment.
- Loved ones observing compulsive behaviors (like purging), emotional distress, or emotional outbursts related to control or fear may need professional guidance and referrals.
Why Early Intervention and Professional Support Matters
- ViaMar’s care model states that early identification of disordered eating creates the best opportunity for effective treatment and a lower risk of chronic complications.
- Recognizing these behaviors allows healthcare providers, psychologists, doctors, dietitians, nutrition counselors, to step in with psychotherapy, meal support, nutrition education, and when needed, inpatient or intensive outpatient intervention.
